Kaerda Bulk Molding Compounds (BMC)
High Performance for Complex Applications
What is Bulk Molding Compound (BMC)?Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) is a high-strength, fiber-reinforced thermoset composite material widely used for producing intricate, high-performance parts. At Kaerda, our BMC typically consists of precisely chopped glass fibers (usually 3mm to 12mm, adjust based on Kaerda’s spec) embedded in a thermosetting resin, such as unsaturated polyester (UP) or vinyl ester.
The formulation includes additional fillers (e.g., calcium carbonate – MD) and specialized additives to enhance specific properties, such as shrinkage control agents, pigments for integral color, mold release agents for efficient processing, and catalysts to manage cure profiles.
Compared to SMC, Kaerda’s BMC materials generally offer enhanced fluidity, making them exceptionally well-suited for injection molding and creating more intricate shapes, complex geometries, and parts with fine details and superior surface finishes.
Key Features & Advantages
- Lightweight with High Strength: BMC components can offer significant weight reduction compared to metals (e.g., up to 35-40% lighter than aluminum or steel of similar strength), without compromising mechanical integrity. Ideal for automotive and portable equipment.
- Excellent Dimensional Stability & Low Shrinkage: Ensures precision in complex molded parts, maintaining tight tolerances.
- Superior Electrical Insulation Properties: High dielectric strength and CTI values, crucial for electrical components, motor housings, and insulators.
- Outstanding Thermal Resistance: Withstands exposure to high operating temperatures, maintaining structural and electrical properties.
- Corrosion & Chemical Resistance: Durable in harsh environments and resistant to various solvents and chemicals.
- Design Flexibility for Intricate Parts: The excellent flow characteristics allow for complex part designs, ribs, bosses, and inserts.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Offers an economical solution compared to die-cast metals or engineering thermoplastics for complex parts, especially with efficient molding cycles and potential for parts consolidation.
- Ease of Manufacturing & In-Mold Colorability: Good mold-release properties facilitate efficient production. Can be molded in various colors, reducing secondary painting needs.
- Durability & Fire Resistance: Formulations available to meet specific flame retardancy requirements for safety-critical applications.
