Versatile Composites for Demanding Automotive Applications

SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) and BMC (Bulk Molding Compound) thermoset composites are extensively utilized across the automotive industry for a wide array of parts in passenger cars, trucks, and tractors. Their widespread adoption is due to a unique combination of properties including high thermal stability, a low coefficient of thermal expansion (comparable to steel), excellent dimensional stability, high impact resistance, and relative lightweight. Furthermore, these materials readily accept high-quality paint finishes, meeting the Class A cosmetic appearance and rigorous paint/cure cycles required by the industry. Common applications include exterior parts like air deflectors, spoilers, window/sunroof frames, grilles, bumpers, and tailgates, as well as critical under-hood components such as headlamp reflectors, heat shields (for engine & transmission), and cylinder head covers. Notably, they are also key for battery housings and covers for electric vehicles.

The heavy truck industry is increasingly turning to advanced composites like SMC and BMC as a strategic alternative to traditional die-cast metals (aluminum, zinc, magnesium). This shift is driven by rising metal costs, new emissions regulations demanding lighter vehicles, and the continuous pursuit of enhanced performance. Composites are particularly favored for numerous under-hood parts in heavy-duty applications due to their excellent thermal resistance (maintaining dimensional control when exposed to high motor heat), superior corrosion resistance against substances typically encountered in engine compartments, and significant lightweighting potential (up to 35% lighter than steel parts of equivalent strength).
