Kaerda Sheet Molding Compound (SMC)
High-Performance Composite Solutions
What is Sheet Molding Compound (SMC)? Sheet Molding Compound, commonly known as SMC, is a high-strength, fiber-reinforced molding compound prepared in sheet form and ready for compression molding. It is a complete, ready-to-mold molding compound material composed of:
- Thermosetting Resin: Typically high-grade polyester or specialized epoxy resins for enhanced performance.
- Reinforcements: Chopped fiberglass strands integrated into the resin paste to provide strength and stiffness.
- Fillers & Additives: Mineral fillers and various chemical agents to control properties like low shrinkage, Class A surface finish, flame retardancy, and integral color.
This composite mixture is processed into a continuous sheet, which is malleable and easy to handle before curing. While SMC is ideal for large, structural parts, Kaerda also manufactures Bulk Molding Compound (BMC), another versatile thermoset molding compound with higher fluidity, making it perfect for more intricate designs via injection or compression molding. Our team can help you select the ideal molding compound for your specific application.
The Sheet Molding Compound Process at Kaerda
The sheet molding compound process is a highly efficient manufacturing method that transforms raw materials into a high-performance composite sheet. At Kaerda, this process is meticulously controlled to ensure quality and consistency:
- Compounding: Resins, fillers, additives, and catalysts are precisely blended in our large compounding kettles to create a uniform resin paste.
- Impregnation: This paste is then transferred to our advanced SMC production lines. It is metered onto carrier films, and chopped fiberglass is deposited onto the paste. Another layer of paste is added to fully impregnate the fibers, creating a "sandwich" structure.
- Compaction & Maturation: The sheet passes through compaction rollers to ensure complete fiber wet-out and achieve a uniform thickness. The SMC sheet is then wound into rolls and stored in a controlled environment for maturation, during which it thickens to a moldable, leather-like consistency.
This controlled process, executed on our 5 advanced SMC production lines, results in a superior molding compound material ready for our clients' demanding applications.
